***** - Near perfect/Perfect.
Warning! The second James Bond film is even less like a "typical" Bond flick than Dr. No was. This installment tends to be considered the closest to the book and it shows. While gadgets make their first appearance in the series in the form of Bond's special briefcase, this not really an action film. Rather it's an extremely taut thriller.
SPECTRE is back and they have plotted to revenge themselves on 007 for the death of Doctor No (and make a few bucks as well). With the help of defected KGB officer Rosa Klebb (Lotte Lenya) and the unwitting Soviet cryptographer Tatiana Romanova (Daniela Bianchi) they lure Bond to Istanbul, Turkey in order to get his hands on a super secret USSR encryption device. He may succeed in this mission, but he may not survive.
This is a stunning piece of filmmaking, not just a great Bond film. At times it's almost Hitchcockian in its look and feel. From Russia With Love keeps a strong pace throughout its length, with no real slow spots. Acting is also strong with Sean Connery really growing into the role in this installment. Special mention should be made of Pedro Armendáriz's fine performance, made even more amazing by the fact that he was severe pain and dying of cancer while his role was filmed. But of course the film has one of it's greatest villains in the person of 'Red' Grant (Robert Shaw). Shaw's mute performance for the majority of film is downright chilling. You know from the first frame he appears in that Grant means business and his final showdown with 007 is one of the series' finest moments. In conclusion, go out and buy this film, now!
